Before you come to KU
This guide contains tips that will help you prepare your computer to be on the IT ResNet network. Following these instructions before you move in to KU residential housing will help make your IT ResNet network registration go as smoothly as possible.
-
Read and print the IT ResNet Registration Guide:
Go to the ResNet website at www.resnet.ku.edu and click on the Registration Guide link on the right side of the page. Print a copy and bring it with you when you come to KU.
-
Disable IPv6:
IT ResNet customers will need to disable IPv6 network settings on their Macintosh or Windows Vista computers. Go to the ResNet site for instructions on how to disable IPv6 on your computer. The URL is www.resnet.ku.edu/docs/ipv6.pdf.
-
Keep your computer up-to-date with the latest Windows and Macintosh Updates:
Windows computers:
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Click on the Tools pull-down menu, then choose Windows Updates from the menu.
- If you're prompted to update Windows components before continuing, do so.
- Eventually, you will arrive at a screen with an Express button and a Custom button.
- Click on the Express button and follow the prompts to install the updates. Once updates are installed, repeat the process until there are no more updates for your computer.
Macintosh computers:
- Click on the Apple menu and select Software Update.
- Install all Macintosh system updates.
-
Install Firefox:
You must use the Mozilla Firefox web browser when you register for IT ResNet. To save time during registration, please download and install Firefox from www.getfirefox.com
-
Install Sophos Antivirus:
Make sure you have the latest version of Sophos antivirus installed on your computer. If you are using another antivirus program, uninstall it and install Sophos from http://www.security.ku.edu/antivirus/download.jsp.
Important information for Non-English versions of Windows Vista ResNet has experienced some issues with registration of non-English versions of Microsoft Vista. Registration may not complete due to the Security Analyzer not recognizing Sophos Anti-Virus. Please follow the registration instructions, and if you have any problems, please contact the ResNet office at 812-0000.
Microsoft Windows 7 Until Microsoft Windows 7 is officially released (currently scheduled for October, 2009), ResNet is not supporting computers using the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system (OS). The current Windows 7 release is considered a beta version, and not a complete release by Microsoft.
If you have any questions, please contact the ResNet help desk at 812-0000 or send a message to resnet@ku.edu.
