Telemarketing and Student Residential Living

Students who find telemarketing calls annoying now have a way to eliminate most of those calls. The Federal Trade Commissions (FTC) has created a National Do-Not-Call registry for residential telephone numbers. All students, whether living on or off campus, are eligible to register their residential phone numbers. The University cannot register on campus residential numbers on behalf of students--registration must be done by residents directly.

If you register by August 31, your number will be included on a National Do-Not-Call list provided to telemarketers in September. Telemarketers will have until October 1 to "scrub" registered residential numbers from their databases.

You may register at no cost in one of two ways.

  • Call 1-888-382-1222 from the number you wish to register. This process is automated and takes approximately two minutes to complete.
  • Go to www.donotcall.gov and register on line. You must provide your e-mail address when registering on line and will receive a confirmation back via e-mail.

Numbers will stay in the registry for five years. It is possible to remove a number from the registry at any time.

Charities, political organizations, telephone surveyors and companies which you already have a business relationship with may still call you.
