Slow Upload Troubleshooting
Some students on the network may experience slow speeds when uploading to a server that resides outside of the KU network. This is caused by the abundant use of file-sharing software that is set in server mode. Server mode is the default mode for most file-sharing programs. This mode allows the rest of the filesharing community to access the KU students shared files. The upload bandwidth is on a first-come-first serve basis, so these file-sharing programs are able to saturate KU-ResNet's upload bandwidth. We are asking that all KU Network Users disable file-sharing of all types in order to increase the available upload bandwidth.
Slow Download Troubleshooting
There should not be any issues with slow downloads within the KU network. If you feel you are experiencing slow download speeds from within the network please contact an RCC at 812-0000 or submit and Online Help Request. When downloading from a source off campus there are several factors that influence the speed of your download. If you are downloading during peak business hours some sites you contact may be slower than at off-peak times. Also the connection speed of the machine you are connecting to has a significant effect on your download speeds. One metric to test your overall download speed is a Net Speed Test. Speeds above 400 Kbps are average and will indicate that the source of your slow download most likely lies within the server you are trying to contact. If you consistently experience speeds lower than 400 Kbps please contact an RCC at 812-0000 or submit and Online Help Request. Please indicate your test speeds from the link above in this request.
