IT ResNet Wireless: System Requirements

You will need the following in order to connect to the IT ResNet network:
  1. A wireless network adapter that is certified for WPA2-Enterprise by the Wi-Fi Alliance® (see logo, below). Most newer machines have wireless cards already installed that meet these standards.

    WiFi

There are two kinds of wireless network adapters.  Internal wireless network adapters are usually already installed inside a laptop when you buy it.  External wireless network adapters are usually purchased separately and plug into a USB port or PCMCIA card slot of the computer

A list of certified cards is available on the Wi-Fi Alliance® web site.  Click on the View Wi-Fi Certifications link on the right side of the screen for each adapter to see if it is WPA2-Enterprise certified:

  2. Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Mac OS X, as earlier operating systems cannot provide support for the level of security required by the IT ResNet network.

  3. A fully-patched computer operating system
    • Mac OS X users need to run Software Update to get the latest Mac OS patches from Apple
    • Windows users need to run Windows update to install all Microsoft Critical Updates.

      Windows Update on Vista

      Windows Update on XP

Windows XP users should install XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) if their computer is capable of running it. If your computer can’t be updated to Windows XP SP3, there is a patch available for computers running XP Service Pack 2 that will enable them to support a WPA2-compliant network adapter.
